What can be fixed

the-hunger-games-catching-fire-300x180Yesterday was a day off that I actually got to take and enjoy! I went to see the movie “42” (very much enjoyed, highly recommended). I am always interested in the preview of coming attractions before the movie: “because you are here at this movie, you will probably like this upcoming movie.”  Sometimes it is quite enlightening. But, yesterday, not so much.  It was more a preview of the what they hope will be the summer blockbusters. One upcoming movie is the second installment of the Hunger Games trilogy, Catching Fire. I found the original movie intriguing and as a result I read the remaining books in the series.

When people ask me why I like the books, it is because the author, Suzanne Collins, writes a great narrative and (spoiler alert) captures the reality that some things broken can not be fixed – but ongoing life is still possible.

The gospel at today’s mass is John 21:15-19 that tells the encounter of Jesus and Peter at the shore where three times Peter is told to feed His lambs/sheep.  Peter who had denied Jesus in the garden. Peter who abandoned Jesus. Peter who sinned in one of most ancient ways described in the Hebrew scriptures: to break relationship.

Some things broken can be fixed on our own or by our own efforts. Some things broken can only be fixed in the grace and mercy of God – not only for ongoing life, but for eternal life.

Every revolution does indeed begin with a spark. May we all catch the spark of God’s mercy and forgiveness.  May the brokenness in each of us be restored.

  1. Coming from a protestant background, it is this wondrous relevation that we can be restored to new life and our brokenness can be fixed through God’s grace that I find so beautiful. I wish this knowledge for everyone who may be searching for that something, which, in reality, is a someone, who will change their lives forever. May each of us find that peace that comes with God’s great love and compassion for all of us.

    • Oh, I should have mentioned that I’m a new convert to the Catholic faith . . . . the depth of God’s love that present in our parish . . . . the Spirit is definitely alive and well here!
