Mosquitos

It’s that time of year again. Summer is upon us and we are drawn to the back porch, the deck, or whatever forms the backyard of your place. It is time to barbeque, hangout, or just enjoy the evening with family, friends, and the uninvited guests: the culicidae  – aka, mosquitos (…. and yes “mosquitoes” is also an acceptable spelling according to Merriam Webster).

Did you know that some varieties of mosquitos are “ankle-biters” preferring the lower leg, ankle, or feet. Others prefer arms and others prefer neck, face and ears. Scientists can only speculate why. And did you know some people are mosquito magnets? If you have O-type blood you are a more tempting target than the folks with B- or A-type blood. Of course, there is nothing you can (or should) do about your blood type.

Mosquitos seem more attracted to people who drink beer. There is not a consensus on why, but the mosquitos remain silent on the matter…except for the buzzing sound. Scientists are sure they know why pregnant women are more desirable targets for mosquitoes: higher metabolism that gives off higher levels of carbon dioxide in the exhaled breath.  Mosquitos can detect those higher levels up to 50 meters away.

Mosquitos are most active at twilight… that’s most active. I am not sure they ever get time off.

Does citronella work as a repellent? Science says no. Does lemon eucalyptus oil work? Yes, it must be applied more often than the off-the-shelf sprays that contain DEET and picaridin. What is the best repellent? A fan. Mosquitos are very weak flyers.

Wear light colored clothing, long sleeves are a plus, layoff the beer, and turn on the fan – and enjoy the time together on the back porch.
