State Fair Cuisine

Given its balmy weather, Florida holds the first of the state fairs on the circuit of vendors who make their living on the circuit. One of the staples of state fairs is the strange food offerings. Being first up, the FLorida State fair becomes the “test kitchen” for food offerings at the event. Sharon Kennedy Wynne of The Tampa Bay Times published  the lineup of this year’s offerings. Warning: if you are a nutritionist or an advocate for healthy eating, you might want to stop reading lest some internal circuit overloads. Read at your own risk.

Poutine Sundae: It may sound like a dessert, but this savory treat features fresh cut fries topped with cheese curds, covered in gravy. Add sirloin steak to make the ultimate cheese steak sundae.

Donut Dog: A mix of savory and sweet, a homemade Long John Donut is topped with a grilled all beef hot dog, applewood bacon and drizzled with icing on top.

Deep-fried fruit kabobs: Leave it to the fair to find a way to deep fry something healthy: fruit kabobs dipped in secret batter and sprinkled with powdered sugar.

Pop Rock Smoothies: This call-back to childhood features smoothies: real fruit smoothies are sprinkled with Pop Rocks candies to give you a snap, crackle and pop in your mouth while sipping.

Loaded fried pickle nachos: Deep-fried pickle chips are loaded with cheese, bacon, chili, jalapeños and ranch.

Funnel cake taco: a taco shell is dipped in a buffalo batter funnel cake mix, fried and filled with buffalo chicken dip. It is then topped with lettuce, cheddar cheese, ranch and Cool Ranch Doritos crumbles.

Deep-fried banana pudding: Doughnut holes are topped with banana pudding and whipped cream and caramel drizzle on top.

Caramel apple cinnamon roll: topped with warm cinnamon apple pie topping, then drizzled with warm caramel. Add white frosting if you feel really indulgent.

Cookie dough explosion: freshly baked chocolate chip cookie, which is topped with creamy salted caramel gelato, then two huge scoops of cookie dough, all covered with hot fudge, caramel sauce and whipped cream. Oreo cookies top it off.

Hog Trof: a baked potato, pulled pork, baked beans and cheese topped with creamy coleslaw.

Twisted s’mores: Ribbons of potato chips are topped with a chocolate and marshmallow drizzle and graham cracker sprinkles.

Bacon caramel apples: a crisp Granny Smith apple covered in rich house-made caramel, rolled in real bacon bits. Also available drizzled in chocolate.

  1. Hi Fr George, did you ever try the specialty mini donuts served by the food truck in the block south of Sacred Heart? I was intrigued by the bacon topped chocolates ones and finally tried them. So good! Makes me think my top pick at the Fair would be the bacon caramel apples. Everything’s better with bacon, right?
