Maybe I can’t be replaced….

Last week I posted a reflection on one of the readings that was generated by OpenAI, a popular AI tool available on the internet. Thanks those who commented that it lacked my “style” and “nuance.”  It’s fun to see what it produces, but today’s NY Times had a cautionary tale. Adam Pasick wrote:The lawsuit began like so many others: A man sued an airline, saying a serving cart struck his knee during a flight. His lawyers filed a legal brief, citing supposedly relevant court cases. But there was a problem: The cases didn’t exist, because ChatGPT — which one of his lawyers used to help write the brief — made them up. The judge in the case is not pleased, and has scheduled a hearing to consider possible sanctions.

The lawyer who created the brief, Steven A. Schwartz of the firm Levidow, Levidow & Oberman, has thrown himself on the mercy of the court, saying in an affidavit that he had used the artificial intelligence tool to do his legal research — “a source that has revealed itself to be unreliable.” I guess ChatGPT suffered from A.I. hallucination.

The novelist Philip K. Dick wrote, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” (later made into the movie Bladerunner) was apparently somewhat prescient in his SciFi imaginations. Let’s hope SkyNet is not an hallucination transforming into a nightmare.

Meanwhile, I think I will keep doing what I do.
