Incomplete Christian

In the first reading for today, St. Paul met some men who, as William Barclay notes, were incomplete Christians. They had received the baptism of John but they did not even know of the Holy Spirit in the Christian sense of the term. Paul then said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus…When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” (Acts 19:4-5) Continue reading →

Generosity Beyond Our Imagination

The sun is extraordinarily generous, giving huge parts of itself away every second. How much? Well if you remember that energy and matter are interchangeable, then every second the equivalent of 4 million elephants are being transformed into light. The sun is giving itself away. If this generosity should halt, all energy would eventually lose its source and everything would die and become inert. We, and everything on our planet, live because of the generosity of the sun.

As Christian we are Pentecost people gifted in the Spirit: There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God – writes St Paul in the 1 Corinthians. But these gifts of service and work – all stemming from the same Grace – all gifted in order to build up the Body of Christ – these gifts are founded upon the deeper gifts of the Spirit given: wisdom, understanding, counsel, courage, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord (cf.
